The phenomenon of malaise is on the rise at universities, reflecting a deteriorating psychological state that is a combination of anxiety and stress factors. This psychological and emotional upheaval within students is indicative of a fundamental existential issue. In fact, hidden behind the choice of an educational program is the significance given by the student to their life goals. It is this dimension of attributing meaning to one’s education and, more broadly, to one’s life (the existential dimension) that we have (...) sought to explore. We hypothesized that a stable investment in one’s life goals and a sense of psychological wellbeing during one’s studies could be fostered by reflective work done alongside the educational process. Our research took the form of a mixed methodological approach to the attribution of meaning to education, including an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA), and the experimentation of support for the meaning of education. Four dimensions of meaning were found to be observable in varying degrees in all students, each playing a specific role. Moreover, this research has confirmed that the meaning of studies is not to be understood solely in terms of education, but is part of a singular life story. Reflective work, developing meaning, facilitated by others (advisor, teacher, etc.) can help preserve/restore the feeling of wellbeing. It should be noted that, as the work presented in this article predates the pandemic, we will not address the amplifying effects of this health crisis on existential issues, which some recent studies are beginning to highlight. When we deal with complex things, like human subjects or organizations, we deal with identity – that which makes a person or an organization what it is and distinguishes him/her/it from other persons or organizations, a kind of “self”. Our identity determines how we think about and interact with others. It will be argued in this chapter that the self is constituted relationally. Moreover, when we are in the realm of the self, we are always already in the realm of (...) engaging with and mediating differences – the realm of ethics. The position which will be developed argues that approaching identity as a complex system allows us to resist thinking of identity as an easily identifiable and static entity. Identity is always being constituted within a complex and contingent world, where we have to make choices based on contingent values rather than on universal knowledge or the outcome of rational calculations. As a result, we have to keep in mind that our daily practices always already have an ethical component, and our decisions need to be continually evaluated and re-evaluated in the light of our (and others’) varying identities. This paper proposes an experimental investigation of the use of vague predicates in dynamic sorites. We present the results of two studies in which subjects had to categorize colored squares at the borderline between two color categories (Green vs. Blue, Yellow vs. Orange). Our main aim was to probe for hysteresis in the ordered transitions between the respective colors, namely for the longer persistence of the initial category. Our main finding is a reverse phenomenon of enhanced contrast (i.e. negative hysteresis), (...) present in two different tasks, a comparative task involving two color names, and a yes/no task involving a single color name, but not found in a corresponding color matching task. We propose an optimality-theoretic explanation of this effect in terms of the strict-tolerant framework of Cobreros et al. (J Philos Log 1–39, 2012), in which borderline cases are characterized in a dual manner in terms of overlap between tolerant extensions, and underlap between strict extensions. (shrink)

In many countries publications in Web of Knowledge journals are dominant in the evaluation of educational research. For various purposes comparisons are made between the output of philosophers of education in these journals and the publications of their colleagues in educational research generally, sometimes also including psychologists and/or social scientists. Taking its starting-point from Hayden’s article in this journal , this paper discusses the situation of educational research in three countries: The Netherlands, South Africa and Norway. In this paper an (...) alternative for comparing research output is offered by invoking comparisons with colleagues at the international level from within the same sub-discipline. It is argued that if one would do so a different picture would emerge, even if one were to limit oneself to particular kinds of publications. The case is then made that if comparisons are regarded as a necessary part of the evaluation of an individual scholar , it would be more fair to use a proxy system which is sub-discipline specific, or minimally contains some kind of correction factor in relation to the over-all quality assessment device. Debates about the relevance or irrelevance of philosophy of education in the context of educational sciences are now obscured, even poisoned by focusing almost exclusively on a particular kind of publication output. As the ‘reward’ system that is developed accordingly is possibly the most important driver of educational research, it puts the sub-discipline unduly under pressure to the extent that it possibly cannot survive. The paper examines the logic and semantics of knowledge attributions of the form “s knows whether A or B”. We analyze these constructions in an epistemic logic with alternative questions, and propose an account of the context-sensitivity of the corresponding sentences and of their presuppositions.

The purpose of this article is to examine the relationship between the formation of the self and the worldly horizon within which this self achieves its meaning. Our inquiry takes place from two perspectives: the first derived from the Nietzschean analysis of how one becomes what one is; the other from current developments in complexity theory. This two-angled approach opens up different, yet related dimensions of a non-essentialist understanding of the self that is none the less neither arbitrary nor deterministic. (...) Indeed, at the meeting point of these two perspectives on the self lies a conception of a dynamic, worldly self, whose identity is bound up with its appearance in a world shared with others. After examining this argument from the respective view points offered by Nietzsche and complexity theory, the article concludes with a consideration of some of the political and ethical implications of representing our situatedness within a shared human domain as a condition for self-formation. While tourism is often seen as a welcome source of economic development, conventional mass tourism is associated with numerous negative effects, such as the destruction of ecological systems and loss of cultural heritage. In response to these concerns, a term that has surfaced recently is, sustainable tourism. This article attempts to define sustainable tourism and asks the question of whether this new term is an acceptable criteria or is merely a marketing ploy to attract the morally conscious tourist.

The Conscience of Time in Spinoza and Boutang. Boutang’s Objection to Spinoza in the Resolution of the Ontologie du secret. This article aims to compare the relation to time and eternity in Spinoza and Boutang. Why such an attempt? Boutang, in footnote nr. 442 of the last chapter of his book, Ontologie du secret, objects to Spinoza, who rejects all ontological content of the future and therefore condemns substance to be an eternal past. On the contrary, Boutang seeks an ontological (...) participation via a subjective imitation of the Trinitarian person, who would act in the modal reality. This requires a change in the consciousness of time, by understanding Time not as a thing, but as something related to Creation itself, in order to finally confer an ontological content to the future as a project. As a result, both conceptions are in opposition to the status of the substance and God to find the effective participation (called the third kind of knowledge in Spinoza). Nevertheless, they can get closer regarding the search of a subject’s metamorphosis in the very duration via a specific participation to eternity which Boutang calls other time, and more metaphorically oblique corridor. Consequently, this consciousness of an other time fills an important gap that remains in the proposition 23, V of the Ethic, which divides consciousness between understanding and imagination at the expense of conscience itself. Having positive moral traits is central to one’s sense of self, and people generally are motivated to maintain a positive view of the self in the present. But it remains unclear how people foster a positive, morally good view of the self in the present. We suggest that recollecting and reflecting on moral and immoral actions from the personal past jointly help to construct a morally good view of the current self in complementary ways. More specifically, across four studies we (...) investigated the extent to which people believe they have changed over time after recollecting their own moral or immoral behaviors from the personal past. Our results indicate that recollecting past immoral actions is associated with stronger impressions of dissimilarity and change in the sense of self over time than recollecting past moral actions. These effects held for diverse domains of morality (i.e., honesty/dishonesty, helping/harming, fairness/unfairness, and loyalty/disloyalty), and they remained even after accounting for objective, calendar time. Further supporting a motivational explanation, these effects held when people recollected their own past actions but not when they recollected the actions of other people. (shrink)

Rosso: Can you say something more about the differences between your work and Derrida’s?De Man: I’m not really the right person to ask where the difference is, because, as I feel in many respects close to Derrida, I don’t determine whether my work resembles or is different from of Derrida. My initial engagement with Derrida—which I think is typical and important for all that relationship which followed closely upon my first encounter with him in Baltimore at the colloquium on “The (...) Languages of Criticism and the Sciences of Man”—had not to do with Derrida nor with me, but with Rousseau. It happened that we were both working on Rousseau and basically on the same text, by sheer coincidence. It was in relation to Rousseau that I was anxious to define, to try to work out some … not discrepancies … but some change of emphasis between what Derrida does and what I’m doing. And there may be something in that difference between us that remained there, to the extent that in a very genuine sense—not as denegation or as false modesty —my starting point, as I think I already told you, is not philosophical but basically philological and for that reason didactical, text-oriented. Therefore I have a tendency to put upon texts an inherent authority, which is stronger, I think, than Derrida is willing to put on them. I assume, as a working hypothesis , that the text knows in an absolute way what it’s doing. I know this is not the case, but it is a necessary working hypothesis that Rousseau knows at any time what he is doing and as such there is no need to deconstruct Rousseau. In a complicated way, I would hold to that statement that “the text deconstructs itself, is self-deconstructive” rather than being deconstructed by a philosophical intervention from the outside of the text. The difference is that Derrida’s text is so brilliant, so incisive, so strong that whatever happens in Derrida, it happens between him and his own text. He doesn’t need Rousseau, he doesn’t need anybody else; I do need them very badly because I never had an idea of my own, it was always through a text, through the critical examination of a text … I am a philologist and not a philosopher: I guess there is a difference there … I think that, on the other hand, it is of some interest to see how the two different approaches can occasionally coincide, at the point that Gasché in the two articles he as written on this topic says that Derrida and myself are the closest when I do not use his terminology, and the most remote when I use terms such as deconstruction: I agree with that entirely. But, again, I am not the one to decide on this particular matter and I don’t claim to be on that level … Stephano Rosso teaches English literature at the University of Verona and is writing a dissertation in comparative literature at SUNY—Binghamton. Cette contribution examine la pertinence de la Convention européenne des droits de l’homme pour les personnes en situation de handicap. Elle se penche sur les principes de la Convention tels que la dignité humaine, l’autonomie personnelle et l’égalité, qui sont particulièrement importants pour les personnes en situation de vulnérabilité. Le texte aborde ensuite les obligations négatives et positives de l’État à l’égard des personnes handicapées. En ce qui concerne les premières, le texte souligne la nécessité de procéder à des évaluations (...) individualisées dans le cadre des processus décisionnels et de trouver un équilibre entre les droits des personnes et les intérêts de l’État. En ce qui concerne les secondes, l’État est également tenu d’évaluer les besoins réels des personnes handicapées. Il doit fournir une aide suffisante, tout en pouvant prendre en compte des considérations financières légitimes. La Convention européenne est ensuite examinée dans sa relation avec la Convention des Nations Unies relative aux droits des personnes handicapées. La Cour européenne des droits de l’homme s’efforce généralement d’interpréter la Convention européenne en harmonie avec les autres traités internationaux. Si la Convention des Nations Unies a ainsi influencé certains développements dans la jurisprudence de la Cour, il existe également des cas où la Cour a estimé que la Convention européenne n’offrait pas le même niveau de protection que la Convention des Nations Unies. La relation entre les deux conventions reste dynamique, ce qui laisse penser qu’avec le temps, davantage de principes de la Convention des Nations Unies pourraient devenir partie intégrante de l’interprétation de la Convention européenne. Parallèlement à ses ouvrages de philosophe fondamentale dont Soi-même comme un autre représente la dernière étape, Paul Ricoeur n'a cessé de publier des articles dans des revues, mais aussi des préfaces dont la vertu pédagogique n'enlève rien à l'acuité de la pensée. Après lecture 1, consacré à la pensée politique, et Lecture 2, une galerie de portraits où défilent les grandes figures de la pensée du XXe siècle, Lecture 3 s'aventure aux " frontières de la philosophie ". Après une (...) enquête préliminaire sur le rôle de la philosophie de la religion dans les systèmes philosophiques de Kant et de Hegel, il traverse ces deux massifs de la pensée post-hégélienne que représente l'Etoile de la Rédemption de Franz Rosenzweig et l'œuvre d'Emmanuel Lévinas, en laquelle il voit d'abord une méditation vigoureuse sur le " témoignage ". S'écartant progressivement du logos philosophique ou de pensées qui ont entrepris de le déborder, Paul Ricoeur traite ensuite du prophétisme, du tragique et du mal. Autant d'interrogations qui fragilisent la spéculation et résistent à une appréhension conceptuelle, mais jamais Ricoeur ne franchit indûment les frontières entre philosophie et non-philosophie, entre philosophie et théologie. Plus que tout autre objet de réflexion, le mal se présente comme un défi décisif pour le philosophe et donc comme une invitation à relancer le travail de la pensée. Parallèlement à son œuvre philosophique, Ricoeur a beaucoup lu et interprété à la Bible, ce récit dont les " essais d'herméneutique " réunis ici montrent l'ampleur des réflexions qu'il suscite. Complètement indispensable de Temps et Récit et de Soi-même comme un autre, Lecture 3 témoigne d'un autre " régime de la pensée " qui souligne l'importance de l'œuvre de Paul Ricoeur. (shrink)
